Route 3: Sandveld

Route 3 of Cape Camino is a remote, multi-day walking route through the Sandveld region of the Western Cape, offering a 3–5 day pilgrimage across vast open landscapes, agricultural farmlands, mountain foothills and coastal plains. The route begins near Kapteinskloof or Sterkfontein and passes through Aurora, Klein Tafelberg and Redelinghuys, covering daily distances of approximately 13km to 24km. Terrain includes gravel farm roads, sandy tracks and footpaths along the base of the Piketberg mountains, with sections that require a moderate level of walking fitness due to soft sand and steady climbs.

The Sandveld Camino is known for its off-the-beaten-track setting, wildflower displays in season (July–September), expansive night skies and quiet, small-town hospitality. Accommodation includes guest farms, rustic camps and private homestays, creating a supported yet deeply immersive rural experience. Route 3 is well suited to walkers seeking solitude, creative inspiration and wide, uninterrupted horizons, and can be booked as a standalone journey or combined with other Cape Camino routes to form part of a longer Western Cape pilgrimage.
